Grand Canyon de Verdon (The Gorges du Verdon) is positioned in south-eastern France (Alpes-de-Haute-Provence is approximately 25 kilometers long and up to 700 meters in depth. This river canyon lies amongst the villages of Castellane and Moustiers-Sainte-Marie and is renowned as one of Europe’s most beautiful canyons. Its name derives from the distinguishing turquoise-green hue of the landscape and the end of the canyon (molded by the Verdon River) flows into the tranquil artificial lake of Sainte-Croix-du-Verdon. Those driving can get to this canyon from various routes; the North Rim (road D52), Route des Crêtes and the South Rim. Each route is a unique scenic delight that offers beautiful views of the canyon. The gorge is a much sought after route due to its proximity to the French Riviera and those driving can indulge in a leisure ride around the rim, river kayaking, hiking or rock climbing. While this is not a real mountain pass, it provides those traveling through a chance to truly experience the landscape and surpasses a typical road trip.
